Phase 1: Problem & Empathy Building

How do we create more usable space in a room? What if we could take those static walls / ceilings in a room and make them more kinetic and usable?

Research Contributions

  • Taking those static walls and making them more kinetic in an effort to allow for versatile surfaces

  • Creating a technique for surface reconfiguration through programmable constraints.

  • Designing a novel structure for a bendable column, and the associated fabrication method.

  • Exploration of the application space, within the context of interactive architecture.

Imagine that you are fresh out of college and are living in a small studio apartment. You have very little functional space for all of your belongings and most of the floor space is going to be taken up as a result.

PROBLEM

  • There is no more space in the apartment

  • Super cluttered. All of the furniture takes up so much space

Phase 2: User Research

Understanding problems student’s face living in small space apartments

I interviewed 1 student who is living off campus in a small apartment.

Phase 3: Prototyping & Final Documentation
